In a region steeped in legacy, this grassroots network is cultivating the next generation of Napa Valley leadership.

ORIGINS: A GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT FOR NAPA’S YOUNG TALENT

In California’s wine country, a new generation of professionals is making its mark through Young Professionals Napa Valley (YPNV). Launched in March 2023, the organization began as a bold vision from Makenzie Payne, who recognized a need for a space where emerging leaders could connect, grow, and lead within their community. From the outset, YPNV’s mission has been clear: to support Napa’s up-and-coming professionals by cultivating career development, building networks, and encouraging community involvement.

As the founding chair, Payne helped build YPNV from the ground up, with the guidance of local business leaders Whitney Diver McEvoy, Grant Smith, and lifelong friend Karlie Cowell. Recently, she passed the torch to Cowell, a marketing entrepreneur and rising local businesswoman. Under Cowell’s direction, YPNV is expanding its influence and programming, continuing its mission while bringing fresh energy to the next chapter of Napa Valley’s professional renaissance.

Rapid Growth and Community Impact

In under two years, YPNV has grown from a small group of founders to nearly 500 members, making it the largest young professionals organization in region. The rapid growth reflects a strong appetite for connection, career development, and meaningful community among the area’s emerging talent. Monthly mixers draw dozens of attendees to local wineries, restaurants, and resorts, creating spaces where young professionals can build relationships, share ideas, and expand their networks. YPNV also partners with established businesses to elevate its programming and deepen community ties. One standout recent example was an exclusive mixer at The Barn, hosted by The Napa Valley Car Club, where music from local DJs Melodic Napa Valley set the tone and wine was poured by Lewis Cellars. These collaborations offer businesses the opportunity to engage directly with the next generation of leaders in dynamic, high-touch settings. Beyond social events, YPNV provides hands-on workshops, industry panels, and volunteer initiatives that reflect its broader mission to foster growth, leadership, and civic engagement throughout Napa Valley.

Looking Ahead

The swift rise of Young Professionals Napa Valley signals a promising cultural shift in Napa’s business community. What began as a small idea has grown into a movement, and the momentum shows no sign of slowing. With its growing membership and support from local businesses and institutions, YPNV plans to expand its programming, from launching mentorship programs that pair emerging talent with seasoned executives to hosting larger conferences and cross-industry panels. The organization’s early successes have already inspired similar young professional networks in neighboring regions, positioning Napa Valley as a model for empowering the next generation. As YPNV enters its next chapter, its mission remains the same: to nurture the leaders of tomorrow. In a valley famous for its old vines and legacy brands, this vibrant group of young professionals is proving that a new generation can take root and flourish, ensuring Napa’s future is as rich and dynamic as its history
